Category: I 1 (Major Corporations/Telecoms)

Synopsis:

The Challenge: How do you manage a workforce with 63,000 people on some form of flexible working and over 12,000 others working at home?

The Solution:  Ensure the technology is in place to make the job easier. Work harder to create a team environment. Ensure your managers are well trained and motivated and can manage by output, setting clear objectives for each individual and measuring against a score card.

The Results: "I think initially certainly for an organisation, it is almost like an act of faith, to actually embark on a flexible working programme.  But our experience has been that it more than pays off, very rapidly."

Over 220 million has been saved in the last 10 years from real estate costs alone. Travel costs have been reduced by 9.7 million per annum and 1800 person years of travel time is saved each year.  Another benefit has been the retention of key skills and the ability to attract talent, reducing employee turnover.
